The tourist attraction that is Chinatown Street Market is perhaps the last place we thought we’d find a vegan food stall. But surprisingly, that’s where the folks behind vegan restaurant/bar HRVST decided to set up Hello Baby, a permanent kiosk dedicated to street grub, vegan style, with familiar local flavors like chili crab.
On the tiny menu of grab-and-go bites, you’ll find sweet and savory dishes taking up equal footing, from the young jackfruit cubano ($10) slathered in hoisin sauce to vegan waffles drizzled in caraway maple syrup ($8).
There’s the classic burger-and-fries combo, only here it’s in the form of beetroot chips with an egg-free frittata and Kroodi cheddar on a vegan bun ($10), which you can get with twice baked potatoes and a side of aioli mayo ($6).
If you’re a visitor looking for a typical Singaporean dish with a twist, Hello Baby’s chili “crab” mantou sliders ($10) are actually enoki mushrooms with vegan chili crab sauce, tucked away in a baked mantou.
While you get your hands dirty digging into the food, toss in a bit of a sugar rush with the nut butter vegan chocolate sponge cake ($6) or try its PB & J rendition of nut butter, jam, and banana on sourdough ($8).
To beat the heat, there’s coconut milk ice cream ($5) and an ice-blended almond and coconut “milkshake” ($8) topped with waffle crisps and berries. Or you can just sip on drinks ($4) like cucumber and watermelon or pomegranate and basil.
It’s fun fast food that aims to inject a playful, hip factor into the oft-misunderstood vegan way of eating — the kind of place that non-vegans would be curious about trying, too.
