Nine reef sharks pulled from west Bali waters

Reef sharks have been relocated from Jembrana, west Bali waters after emerging concerns from local authorities that the sharks would attack humans.

The evacuation was conducted by the Maritime and Fisheries Monitoring Society, POKMASWAS.

The nine black-tipped reef sharks were taken from Gilimanuk, since many tourists dive and snorkel in the area, according to Gilimanuk neighborhood leader, I Gede Ngurah Widiada.

“I’ve heard that sharks have also entered the Gilimanuk Bay. I’m also worried if they’ll attack tourists,” Widiada said on Tuesday, as quoted by Tribun Bali

Meanwhile, POKMASWAS Gilimanuk chairman Slamet Heriyanto said these sharks are not under conservation status, but the sharks will surely become extinct if they are not protected.

“Later we will schedule a release to maintain the population,” Head of Gilimanuk Fish Quarantine, I Nyoman Diana Saputra added.

The sharks were just about a meter in length, according to Saputra.
