Kerobokan Prison is seriously understaffed and overcapacity: Official

Kerobokan Prison is dangerously over capacity and there aren’t enough prison guards for the amount of inmates.

For instance, there is a block in the prison where there’s only one guard for about 500 inmates, says Head of the Bali office of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, Sulistiono.

“There are five blocks that are guarded by just one person,” Sulistiono told Tribun Bali on Sunday, adding that these five blocks contain 500 people.

Given this context, it suddenly makes a lot more sense how such a fatal clash could break out last week amongst two rival gangs inside and around Bali’s Kerobokan Prison, a supposed “high security facility.”

There are 140 prison employees that include administrative officers, and staff, and only 50 security personnel to cover 1,100 inmates. There are 14 guards on duty each day, Sulistiono explained.

And the prison’s physical capacity is actually not fit to hold the 1,100 inmates, but rather is only enough for 360 inmates, he added.
